Optimizing Computer Vision Models for Edge Agricultural Diagnostics

How we achieved 94.2% crop disease classification accuracy on low-cost Android hardware in Kisii using MobileNet quantisation and Swahili audio feedback.

### Agricultural AI Beyond the Cloud

Smallholder farmers in East Africa need real-time answers when crop diseases threaten their harvests. Sending high-resolution plant photos to distant cloud APIs over 2G/3G connections causes prohibitive bandwidth costs and frequent timeouts.

Engineering KilimoIQ's Offline Vision Engine

In building KilimoIQ, we addressed this challenge by deploying INT8-quantized MobileNet models directly onto Android devices:

  • **Model Quantization**: Reduced model footprint from 85MB to sub-12MB with less than 0.8% degradation in top-1 accuracy.
  • **On-Device Inference**: Scans run in under 800 milliseconds locally on standard Android smartphones without using cellular data.
  • **Multilingual Remediation**: Raw diagnostic metrics are immediately converted into actionable Swahili and local language remedies, empowering farmers without technical barriers.

Real Impact in the Field

Deploying lightweight, field-resilient AI models directly into farmers' hands has proven that cutting-edge machine learning can operate effectively in low-bandwidth environments when architected with empathy and deep local context.
